Welcome to KIDS ON THE MOVE
Jennifer DiNallo, M.A. has her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Exercise Physiology and has been researching the problem of obesity in children for the past 5 years. She has designed and directed the After-school Activity Program in North Carolina and has recently brought this program to Williamsport, PA.

Defining Obesity

To define obesity, a distinction between overweight and obesity should be made. The term overweight is defined as exceeding population norms or average weight, considering that person's gender, height, and frame. The term obesity is defined as an excessive amount of body fat. It is possible to be obese and within the normal weight range, and to be overweight and of normal body fat. More than 80% of obese adolescents become obese adults, suggesting current weight control efforts for obese children may be insufficient and/or ineffective.

What does KIDS ON THE MOVE do?
School and community programs have the potential to help children and adolescents establish lifelong, healthy physical activity patterns. Implementing prevention programs and getting a better understanding of treatment for youngsters is important to controlling the obesity epidemic. KIDS ON THE MOVE emphasizes physical activity as one component of a healthy lifestyle. More importantly, KIDS ON THE MOVE offers a fun, noncompetitive way for kids and parents to become healthier together through:

  • PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
  • NUTRITION EDUCATION
  • BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION

Childhood obesity on the rise …
Pediatric obesity is a crisis in the United States. More than 25% of children are obese and that percentage is on the rise. Children spend more time watching television and playing video games than anything else except sleeping.

The fact that childhood obesity is quickly spreading among our youth and should be of great concern to parents and educators today. Childhood obesity is associated with various risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD), as well as high blood pressure, increased LDL cholesterol levels, negative body image, and decreased perceived physical competence. Most importantly, obesity has a tendency to follow a child into adolescence, and then into adulthood, where it is very difficult to change unhealthy behaviors and habits already formed. Research has shown that the percentage of children, ages 6-11, who are obese (> 95th percentile for Body Mass Index) has doubled since 1980. In addition, the number of adolescents, ages 12-19, who are obese has tripled since 1980. There are many different causes for childhood obesity, the most prominent being lack of physical activity. Following very close are the poor nutritional habits of children and their families, as well as the lack of emphasis put on healthy daily activities.

KIDS ON THE MOVE helps to increase physical activity levels in children!
Lifelong physical activity habits should be instilled in children at a young age. Policies that promote FUN, lifelong physical activities are key. Physical and social environments that encourage and enable physical activity are the main elements in the KIDS ON THE MOVE program. Children need to know how to and choose to be consistently and intensely playful. A fun, safe, physical activity-conducive environment is necessary to nurture this side of kids.
